In May 2009, a small team of rock climbers departed for Namibia with two goals: to find a way up an unexplored face, and to find a way into a deeper understanding of southern Africa.
One of those climbers is Majka Burhardt, author of “Go East” in Alpinist 29. With backgrounds in anthropology and creative writing, Majka is captivated by cultures–from discovering the hard-scrabble New England mentality to learning from Himba women painted in red ochre and butterfat.
So, when she climbed a new route on the Brandberg called Southern Crossing (V 5.11+, 1,300′) with fellow climbers Peter Doucette and Kate Rutherford, the purpose of their journey was far from over. A question still remained: Can adventure and culture combine to create understanding?
WayPoint Namibia is a 30-minute documentary that begins to answer that question.
