Three Chinese climbers have made a first ascent on Kangze’gyai (ca. 5800m), the highest peak in China’s Qilian mountains. After wrestling with pockets of deep snow, Li Yong, Huang Zonghua and leader Yuan Wei ascended the remote peak via its previously unclimbed west face (AI3, 600m).
The team spent the first 10 days of October in the area. For their three days on the wall, the climbers brought sleeping bags, a stove, a small amount of food and four packs of cigarettes. They dug caves for overnight bivouacs and summited October 7. They measured the summit height at 5817m.
