Jeremy Roop and Joe Forrester recently made the first recorded free ascent of the Lower Chambe Face (aka the Eastwood Route, 2,000′) and bagged 3,000 feet of new terrain on the Upper Chambe Face, Mt. Mulanje, Malawi. The lower face now goes free at III 5.10d; the new route, Nkhalango Khoswe, is IV 5.10.
The team said that Nkhalango Khoswe is Chichewa for “Jungle Rats.” A fitting name, perhaps: the route, Forrester said, follows a “spider- and scorpion-filled jungle chimney system to the top.”
More details on the climb will be posted in Alpinist NewsWire when they become available.
